Twenty five years after his Carloway FC debut, club legend Kenny ‘Dokus’ Macdonald has indicated that he is hanging up his boots after 532 appearances and 166 goals. Kenny’s 20-minute substitute appearance in the 1-1 draw against Harris in Tarbert yesterday contained all the poise, touch, control and leadership which has typified an extraordinary career. His first game for Carloway was on 14th April 2001 in a league game up in Ness and his first goal came four days later in a draw against Tong. Kenny was up and running and, despite the odd tubigrip bandage, he never really stopped. As the young team matured, they started to press for trophies and Kenny was right at the heart of it: a fantastic goal in the 2011 Highland Amateur semi-final against Avoch in Ullapool; some great wing play, a vital assist and a penalty shoutout goal in the breakthrough Co-op Cup final victory against Back in 2012; a semi-final winner in Ness leading to the 2013 Jock Stein cup win; a crucial goal in a victory over Back in the penultimate game of the 2013 league winning campaign, a season in which he scored nineteen goals; a strong centre-midfield appearance in the 2014 Highland Amateur Cup Final at the Tulloch Stadium in Inverness; goals in the Eilean an Fraoich cup final victories against Lochs in 2016 and Ness in 2017; and, the 2017 league-winning goal against Point in Carloway. That’s just the highlights, not forgetting the incredible achievement of scoring in 25 consecutive seasons. Sometimes when a player stops playing the club retires his shirt – we would have to retire the whole set as Kenny has worn them all, including the goalie shirt. Kenny’s impact has not only been on the field and, as well as being a long-term committee member and club sparky, Kenny is currently joint manager of the Western Thistle under-14s team. A remarkable man, player and teammate. To slightly misquote Shakespeare, we may never see the likes of him again.
