Carloway FC is saddened to hear of the death of Stuart Rankin who passed away yesterday evening, Thursday 8th September.

Stuart reported on and documented many of our fixtures over the last fifteen years and we are extremely grateful that he was around to particularly record our two league championships in 2013 and 2017, the run which took us to the HAC final in 2014 as well as our various cup wins.

His unbiased, erudite, and detailed reports, written in his own unique style, were much appreciated, especially by those who were unable to attend the fixtures. The late “Brot” Macarthur, who always waxed lyrical of his reports, often mentioned that Stuart’s reports would not be fully appreciated until the years had passed: not only for the writing but for their historical content and reference, which has indeed proved to be the case.

Stuart was an agreeable, polite, and courteous man with a vast knowledge of not only football but sport in general. He described himself as a tough tacking left back in his younger days, so the left back position came under particular scrutiny when reporting on games, but he was always too much of a gentleman to include his innermost thoughts to print as to the overly high standards he set for the individual in this position!!.

Although not only a great supporter of Carloway FC he was also a lifelong Dumbarton FC supporter whose results he always looked out for first on a Saturday afternoon. Stuart will be sadly missed by not only those connected with Carloway FC but by his friends and acquaintances throughout local football. Carloway FC therefore wish to pass on our condolences to his wife Catriona and family.
